Having a birthday in August, I was assured one thing- my birthday party was going to be at Schlitterbahn. After countless parties, we did at some point exhaust every area of the waterpark and eventually branched out to other places to the chagrin of all my friends. But as a child I 100% had the most kick a** birthday parties! Well, ok so maybe years 1-3 my fellow baby friends could have cared less where they were, but I’m sure everyone else enjoyed the scenario. I think it was around birthday number 3 where my mom really kicked it up a notch as far as where it was held in the park and what other fun activities we would have. For my third birthday we held it at the pizza parlor, which for anyone who doesn’t know where that is, it’s in Schlitterbahn West next to the Tad Pool and Polywog Pond. (Two of my favorite places to hang as a kid). This was the first year the pizza parlor opened, 1985 to be exact, and man were we going to tear it up! (I couldn’t find any old photos of these areas so I just added news and a construction shot of the Polywog Pond).
Back then the pizza parlor was akin to a Showtime Biz or Chuck E Cheese’s. We had countless video games, an animatronic, puppet show, a ball pit, Skee-Ball and a tiny version of carnival rides for small toddlers. It was like having my very own Chucky Cheese! Yeah, birthday number 3 was shaping up to be one the best yet!
Two EXTRA things that took this party to the edge: a piñata and I didn’t have to have the dreaded combined sibling party. My sister is also born in August, which led to a few disappointing birthdays. Oddly enough, now we love combining our birthday celebrations. As a kid though, that’s supposed to be your special day, and I was not about to share it with anyone! Back then, we’d even have to share presents, but luckily now we get to enjoy our own. I was really hoping that this year I’d get the necklace I’d been pining after, which I had seen on the Jacobs The Jeweller website, as well as a few other jewellers, but I’ve got to wait a couple of days to find out.
This particular birthday year makes me laugh, because in my mind it totally exemplifies what ALL Schlitterbahn birthdays look like. Sunburnt kids hopped up on sugar and excitement. Every photo my parents have of me from this birthday look like my eyes are about to pop out my head, I’m sunburnt and struggling to keep the strap of my suit from falling down, which further showed how sunburnt I really was that summer. Memories….
Too bad we still don’t have the puppet show and ball pit, those where my fav! Although, I’m pretty sure it’s a good thing both are gone. My poor mom! Most years she had to plan two separate birthdays: one for me, and one for my sister.
Cakes, Candles and Chaos! It’s Birthday time at Schlitterbahn. Just another tale of growing up Schlitterbahn!
